I played with the picture a little bit and it appears to be a very damaged D.

I think it was a pocket piece due to the higher wear on the obverse.

That makes no sense at all. Coins wear on BOTH sides in a pocket, and the reverse of this coin is easily VF. The obverse MUST be VF as well, just struck with a very worn obverse die.

and that's exactly what this is - a worn obverse die.

Most of this stuff is simple common sense and a little understanding of the minting process. It's not guess work.
