I found this 2000 penny in a box today. It has great luster, and the reverse has full detail, but the obverse seems as though it was struck from a worn die or a die that had a lot of grease on it. What do you guys think? Any input would be appreciated!

Sure looks like a strike thru. You can hardly see the date.

Something was between the die and the coin when it was struck. In this case I think you were right, it was proably struck thru grease. It's a nice example.

I knew we would end up at this question (I would ask it too). I honestly don't know. I have found a few of these in various dates and degrees of weakness. I even have one where you can't see a date at all. They are not rare but when they are this weak then I would think they have some small collector value. We will just have to wait for Chuck, Bill, Mike or one of the other more experienced guys to help with this one.

Struck though grease! An excellent example. The real question, where to those lines come from? The theory is they are present on the planchet. Welcome to the grease club!

As others have said, the coin was Struck Through Grease or oil. The lines are the original lines present on the unstruck planchet. The grease has no texture of its own, but instead preserves the original texture of the unstruck planchet. Value would be $5 - $8.
