I was going through some rolls of nickels this morning and came across this 2017 150 years 5 cent nickel with some questionable doubling on the Obverse and the Reverse and was hoping you guys might be able to clarify what I'm seeing.

I went through 13 rolls of circulated 2017 nickels and only pulled 2 with this doubling.

I have compared them with other 2017 150 year nickels and the devices are of normal size and not reduced from that of Machine Doubling, so that leaves me with either Die Deterioration or some type of doubling, I'm only asking for opinions because I think if it were Die Deterioration the doubling wouldn't look as clean as what it does.

thanks in advance

If the doubling is radial in fashion over the entire coin (i.e., from the centre of the coin outwards to the rim), then it is almost always Die Deterioration Doubling.

Thank you SPP, I thought as much.

I just remember reading something about class II hub doubling affecting devices closer to the rim so I thought that may be what I was seeing, but I'm leaning more towards DDD as well.

If the die is allowed to deteriorate even more... then you see the radial flow lines even on the fields...

This makes me curious - has RCM implemented "single squeeze" hubbing, and if so, when? Beginning in 1999, all US dies are made using single squeeze hubbing. This impacts the kind of "doubled die" that is possible after 1999 in the US, which to me is more like "MD for dies".
