Just want to clarify some things. I know you can join/subscribe to ANA, and receive some benefits. On the ANA website, it says you can have free direct submissions to NGC. This confuses me a bit. I know that for most TPGs, you have to first be subscribed to them, which can cost around $30-$50 yearly on average, with normal benefits, but then you also have to pay an amount to submit the coin, which for instance is $16 for a modern day coin on for PCGS. My question is, does ANA cover the subscription price to NGC, or the cost of having to send the actual coin in? |

If you join the ANA you don't have to join NGC; you are automatically a member. But you have to pay for the submissions. And don't forget S&H -- both ways! You end up paying $30-50 (depending on the tier) to submit one coin. That's why it's better to submit multiple coins of the same tier at the same time, i.e., on one submission form. Only one S&H cost for the lot. Edited by kanga

I see, and if you do multiple together, how much does it cost you, to say, submit 5?

These days if a coin is not worth around 150 , not worth submission To NGC or PCGS .

When you get your ANA membership number, call NGC customer service and they will set up your NGC submitter number. It's the same as their lowest tier of membership ($39?), i.e. it does not come with any grading vouchers. Once you have the number from NGC, set up an online account (or ask Customer Service to link it to an existing account). Pacificoin, I know lots of people say that, but, I was looking at the prices and I feel like I'm missing something. For instance, if I wanted to submit a really high grade 1970 cent, it's a modern coin. The maximum value the coin can have is $300, and if I did submit it, the price would cost $16 for PCGS. I understand that the S&H cost would come into play, but not certainly above $30 right?
What other expenses create that "only submit if it has a value of $150?"

If you think your coin has a value >$300, then it will fall into a different tier. OR You can lie and take a chance. Someone did that recently, i.e., submitted it at the Economy level and gave it a low value (<$50). Part of your submission is putting a value on the coin. His coin got lost and the TPG would only give him his stated value. He tried to save a few bucks and maybe lost lots. |

Right that's what I'm talking about. If I wanted to submit a coin worth $50-$100, what would that cost?

If the Economy tier is $16 then go to the USPS site and determine how much it will cost you to ship it. Then look on the submission form and it will tell you how much the TPG will charge you to ship it back to you. Add those 3 numbers together and there's your cost. |

Well it's more or less a question that has no backbone to it. For instance, if I wanted to grade a MS66+ 1944 LWC, that would probably fall into that area of pricing. I don't have a specific coin I wish to grade at the moment, I just want a baseline for the future. Thanks for the help kanga. |

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is I believe both PCGS and NGC have an "invoice fee" of $8 to $10 for each invoice.
As for cost let's say you have 1 coin worth $100 you want to send in and it can be sent in under the "modern" tier (that's their lowest cost) and you aren't getting any special labels. We are looking for the absolute minimum cost.
Cost to grade $17
Invoice fee $10
Return shipping $24 (NGC uses Registered mail as their default shipping choice. And they make money on this, their actual cost to send it back Registered is only $16.)
Total $51 plus whatever it costs you to send the coin to NGC. Say you use a flat rate box call it $8 so the total minimum cost for sending in a single coin is $59.
But say you sent in 5 of them
grading fee $85
Invoice fee $10
Return shipping $24.
Total $119 Plus cost to ship, we can still use that flat rate box but add insurance for $500 so $8 + $7.10
Total cost $134 or $26.80 per coin. As you can see by submitting more coins at the same time it cut the cost per coin by more than half. But still these are MINIMUM costs.

Wow that's very interesting. The submission price overall is indeed pricey if you just submit one coin. Huh, that makes sense. Thank you for giving me this outline Conder. Helps a lot! I'll certainly make sure to keep this in mind the next time I wish to submit a coin to a TPG. |
