Hello, I am a brand new collector and very new to everything. I would just like any opinions good or bad regarding the pics I am posting from the seller of an auction I am looking at. Does anything look out of place on this coin? Also, I have been looking at pics and youtube all afternoon regarding ways to tell if a coin has been cleaned, this coin does not look cleaned to me, but I am a total beginner. Does this coin looked cleaned to you, and if it does could you please tell me what makes you think that? Thanks in advance for any input good or bad!

I dont think it has been cleaned but that scratch across the face on obverse would make this a details coin. AU Details (Scratch) in my opinion.

Unless the best you can afford is a damaged coin, pass on this one.
Otherwise think 50% of catalog value.

Remember, a coin with a problem will always be a coin with a problem.

It's too shiny for an AU coin and it has some circulation high point wear. But that's not the issue that scratch will details this coin. I personally wouldn't pay more than $75 for this.

I recommend getting one in a PCGS or NGC slab. This way the condition is "guaranteed." It seems much safer, especially for newbies, because then authenticity and "problems" become much less of an issue. When I first considered buying a 1921 High Relief Peace dollar on approval twenty years ago the dealer argued that it was MS(63), but others said AU(58), or AU(55), or MS(61), or even cleaned, and I did not have the experience to really differentiate them when it was, and still is, a REALLY big price difference! Eventually I just bought one in a PCGS slab that says MS(62). It is not quite as pretty, but at least I was confident in what I was buying!

Adam590: Congrats on 100 posts ...contest time?

chsear11: Looks cleaned (dipped) to me. no mint luster cartwheel that I can see. I agree with getting one slabbed by ANACS-PCGS-NGC.

AU-55 but that gouge across the face might details it.

I agree with fenton, AU-55 with nice original luster but the facial scratch will give it a "details" grade.

AU Details scratched
The coin does not have orginal surfaces. It has been messed with either cleaned or dipped. Pass and look for a better example.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I appreciate it. Until I learn more and get better at knowing exactly what I am looking at I will stick to slabbed coins if they are expensive. I have also been spending some time going through the grading part of the forum just looking at pictures and seeing what everyone has to say. This community seems pretty helpful and full of knowledge! Thanks again

I agree it's quite undesirable in condition both technically and with problems. But if the price is right.l? Maybe 1.5 or 2 x melt? Hardly see 1921's in low grade, I have no idea what they move for. I'm sure it will probably go for much more, but some people wouldn't mind filling this hole cheap.
