I have a 1866 3 cent piece and it looks like it has a crack in the edge.

This is probably damage but wasn't sure and wanted to get a second opinion.

Thanks for taking a look.

@phatum, what is the weight of this piece? Is it within mint spec?

I'm not sure on the weight. I don't have a scale.

Ok, that's all right. The surface just seems unusually rough to me on this one. It may be fine, but did you pick up this coin from a reputable source?

No, my dad passed away a few years back and I found this, along with some Barber dimes, while cleaning out his house.

Not sure about the crack, but it looks like a once buried coin that was harshly cleaned.A metal detector find?

Definitely a collectible item for an error collector. The coins is obviously rough as mentioned, so the value is much lesser due to that alone. I have a neat Walking Liberty half that is cracked almost to the center on both sides. An interesting and not at all common error to find.

Yes that is a cracked planchet.

Coin also has either 5 or 6 die cracks on the reverse. Shame about the poor surfaces.
