Hi guys,

Can someone please help me determine what type of error this is on the reverse right wheat stalk? The small blob of metal on the right wheat stalk looks a bit strange.

Also wanted to ask, what is the best way to get the carbon spots off the obverse of this penny without damaging it. Is this possible?

Thanks very much.

That is a die chip. What causes these? Die age, a striking event, a die clash or something else. These chips rise on coins, because the die itself broke off a bit and left a void. (those showing a raised area on the coins) These are common on the 1950's wheat cents as they over used the dies past normal retirement.

That blob is a die chip. Fifties cents are notorious for die chips. 'Carbon spots'? There's nothing that can be done once they appear. Others will likely weigh in on the spotting matter.

Nice photos.

Also the very small spots are sneeze droplets. (The smallest form of liquid) They alter the color of the coin. That is what you are seeing above the Liberty area.

Die chip. I had never considered unwiped off sneezes for the spots. Ick.
