Today for the first time I got charged sales tax on a coin purchase. My state has required sales tax on all purchase for at least 6 months. But much like in person purchases, sales tax for coins in Iowa is exempt.

Most of the coins I've sold have been with no sales tax. But of course, that is up to the rules of the buyers state.

I was buying foreign coins so I thought maybe that was the difference. So I went back and looked through my purchases. I've bought English coins from a Canadian seller. US coins from US sellers. German and Canadian coins from a US seller. All with no sales tax.

It wasn't a large purchase. Only $3.50 in sales tax. Not enough to make me chase down someone at ebay. But still annoying.

Could it be that the sellers state makes them charge it. I've never heard of that before. Thought even with sites like Amazon, tax was calculated based on the rules of the purchasers state.

Anyway, rant over.

Check with your Iowa taxing authority.

I scanned the Iowa sales tax exemptions list and nowhere did I see that coins and bullion were exempt from sales tax.

I hope I'm wrong.

I haven't seen it in the tax code but I know it exists. I've been buying coins at various coin shops for years. No sales tax. I've been buying coins at auctions for years. One time I got charged Iowa sales tax. I pointed out to the owner that there shouldn't be. The next time I went to that auction they printed out two invoices. One for coins with no sales tax. One for other stuff I bought that did have sales tax. I assume they wouldn't make that change without checking with Iowa Dept of Revenue first.

Sold a coin on ebay for $750. Went to someone in my town, in Iowa, ebay didn't calculate or charge any sales tax. My wife makes some craft items that we sold to people in many different states, including Iowa. Those all got sales tax added.

Must have been a glitch in their system. Coins are definitely exempt from sales tax in Iowa.

ebay is having issues with sales taxes right now.

Chat in with ebay and ask them to refund the sales tax on your purchase.

The rep says it'll take 7 to 10 days to investigate and refund the tax.

They charge me sales tax on coins when they ship to my summer home in Minnesota even though I am buying for re-sale. Don't know what the exemption rules are for Minnesota but seems ridiculous to tax bullion or old coins - what's next? tax on purchase of Amazon or MMM stock?

Probably in Minnesota, as they tax your military retirement as well. No more coin purchases for me when I am up north. I have an exemption down here in Texas (stuck here until Pandemic is over) and no income tax or tax on my military retirement.
