Unfortunately the coin is circulated, but I believe this is a 1973 DDO 5c with Queen double neck that I found in a coin roll!

Machine doubling, not a DDO.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post outside links here, but it looks like an error posted on coinsandcanada. Error #3714.

What am I missing? Is that not a reliable site for errors?

Thanks

Anyone who is a collector can submit photos of a coin with what the owner thinks are varieties or errors. They can call or name it whatever they want. The site is not really vetted, so just use CaC as one of several references and don't take the variety/error portion as the gospel. You will see lots of what the submitter thought was a DD and it will be MD or Die Deterioration or something else... but MD's are considered errors, not varieties.

Can you provide the link for this image? I will ask Coinsandcanada to make the correction.

Thanks

Coins and Canada have it listed as "Double Queens Back" but when CAC refer to "Double" they are actually talking about Machine Doubling.

Machine Doubling happens during the strike of a coin and it is considered an Error like okiecoiner pointed out and some collectors do collect them but are not worth a premium.

A Doubled Die happens to the Die itself before the coin is struck, when the Mint is designing new Dies sometimes the process quite literally makes things doubled (Legend, Portrait, Numbers ect).

Than there is Die Deterioration Doubling, which also happens During the strike of a coin, but Die Deterioration Doubling is not really an error like that of Machine Doubling, reason being is Die Deterioration is just the result of an over used die that should have been pulled from the minting process sooner. Again some collectors do collect Die Deteriorated coins, however they are also not worth much of a premium.

Once you can tell the difference between Genuine Doubled Dies, Machine Doubling and Die Deterioration it is not something that is easily forgotten.
Finding and discovering modern Canadian doubled die varieties since 2018.

Thanks Meandice for the link.
In the French Forum section of CaC, your referred coin is clearly identified as " Machine Doubling" or "coin decale" in french. However the error section of the 1973 5 cents was never updated with the catagory (coin #3714).

I will ask for the update.
