Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and somewhat of a coin collector. I don't do it professionally, but am one to buy some here and there at auctions. Let's get to the question! So I'm going through some pre 64 coins and I came across this 1961 nickel that looks to me as if there is a D over an S. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything mentioning such a thing. I'm just wondering what your opinions are. Thanks for the help! Edited by ckledrey 07/26/2020 8:38 pm

to CCF. OMM,over mint marks stopped in 1955. Need good close ups to see if it might be a RPM of something else. John1

I added a third picture. If you zoom in you can clearly see there is something under the D mint mark.

Given the last photo posted, it's looking like the D mintmark took a hit at the top. Close-in, high resolution photo--if possible--would help clarify the matter.

Thanks for the response Coop, like I said, I'm not a seasoned coin collector and the feedback helps. I'm just curious as to what it could be. First time I've stumbled upon something like this.

It could be coin contact. A hit from another coin that reduced area of the mintmark.
