Hi,
I found a 2004-P Peace Nickel as I was searching through an unopened $50 U.S. Mint bag and found this nickel. I took it to a coin shop and to a coin show and nobody can tell me what it is. The suggestions I received were an annealing error or toning from the bag. It was the only one in the bag like it. Maybe it was swept up off of the mint floor and put into the bag? I lightly cleaned it with MS-70 cleaner and a q-tip and it did not change the appearance. I posted two pictures with a normal nickel found in the bag for comparison. Thanks!

Over the years I've come across many clad nickels and quarters having a slight 'warm' tone. Not uncommon. Curiously, I've found this much more frequently with P mint coins (not all P mint coins). Could be a matter of environmentally-caused mild toning. I'm not terribly deep in annealing matters to comment on that aspect.

Coming out of a mint bag (like the OP states) likely precludes it just being dirty. This bag was filled with new coins form the mint and sealed there.

Here is a quarter I once found the forum determined was likely an annealing error. It, too, was straight from the mint:

Your pictures remind me of an annealing error.

Here is a good thread for learning about annealing errors or "Black Beauties:"

Thanks for the replies. I do not know much about annealing errors so I will look into that. If I send it to the NGCS can they specifically identify the error? I know it may cost more then it's worth, but I am in this to have fun not make money :)

FWIW I've found similar variance in solid-date rolls, and have chalked it up to variance in production. A given bag or roll will likely have coins from multiple different presses and various planchet production sets.
