I agree it looks mid-AU, 53 or 55.

Wow. Thanks for the grades! I may seriously hesitate to submit this to PCGS. It is currently in an NGC slab as MS(61), and was so when I bought it in 2003. I was wondering if it could score a 62 or a 63. Thanks for your opinions to dissuade me on this one.

Huh, usually the older ones tend to be undergraded

I would let it rest in it's current tomb. Leave well enough alone!

MS61 seems about right imo.

MS61 is a market grade for that piece. If it were truly MS it would deserve a higher grade. The reverse (appears) to show clear signs of light circulation.

Thanks, BH1964--I must confess I have not heard this term before--what do you mean by "market grade?" Does this mean the MS(61) for this particular coin does not truly mean "mint state" and that it would be universally certified as MS(61) because coins that are truly mint state would earn a 62 or higher?

This is my subjective opinion only Adam but many coins are "market-graded" into holders where TPG believe their value "should be". MS61 is a classic market grade for nice AU coins that are attractive and close to MS. Yours seems to be just such a piece and could very easily come back from PCGS in an AU55 holder.
