Picked this up last night along with some wheat rolls. Has a couple of suspect areas on it. Not sure if someone was trying to get a little extra silver or trying to enhance lettering and relief around olive branch and star.

If it's real, I'd say it has had a hole plugged and the detail re-engraved (crudely). The problem area of the AD on the reverse lines up with the problem area of the olive branch and star on the obverse.

At best it's harshly cleaned and has low basal value as a Trade dollar.

Conder is dead on. You can see the faint outline of a hole.

I think this is an amazing coin for the age, and the design is also very nice.I also feel this was a problem coin at some time, but feel it is still a very nice piece of history.I have never taken the time to look at a Trade dollar, I like the reverse the best, the apparent crack or line on the reverse, adds to the appeal, intresting conversational piece, IN MY OPINION...

It does look real and might grade as high as EF/AU details cleaned/damaged(holed-plugged-repaired)/scratched. Hopefully it didn't set you back too much!

Fortunately I stuck to my limit on these. 3 times face or $3.00. Also picked up an 1878P Trade dollar at the same price. Off to the local B&M, trade them in for some Morgans.
