Hi! I'm hoping someone can tell me what I have here and how it got this way. It came from my Grandfather's coin collection and appears to be a 1953 S penny but it is the size of a dime and has a very thick rimm that partially obscures the date and lettering. Is this an error or something someone did to it? Thanks!

Very interesting. Is it possible to get the weight of this coin? And how about a photo edgewise? to the CCF!

to the CCF! It looks like it's been damaged tossing around in the drum of a dryer. Coins get caught at tumbled for a while, then fall out and sometimes returned to circulation. This one has the classic folded rim of a Dryer Coin.

I agree this looks like a Dryer Coin, see how the rim is thick

I'm not sure I'm putting this in the right location but I want to thank everyone for helping me solve this mystery. I would never have guessed the heat from a dryer could have caused this but that makes perfect sense. Thank you all :)

@karrieshell, it's not the heat that does it, here's a link they explains it well from a fellow member. http://goccf.com/t/143863

Karrieshell To CCF. My guess would be a heated coin and a spoon trying to make a copper ring. Due to the dark burnt color. Most Dryer Coins are not that dark.
