Hi, all ~

Here's another one of my handful of mystery coins that I've had kicking around for 30-40 years.

This 1897 Ceylon 10 cents has the most unusual countermark I've ever seen. It's a solid three-dimensional silver plaque added, or affixed, to the coin itself.

Ceylon is not one of my specialties, so any help I can get on the meaning of "ACCJ" and what sort of token this is will be greatly appreciated.

Also, is there a numismatic term for this sort of c/m? "Plaque" is just something I made up, of course.

Many thanks for taking a look!
Tom

@dalton, I'm certainly not an expert on Ceylon. Counterstamps that only comprise a few letters and aren't added to added for a recognizable reason are sometimes called mavericks and are typically impossible to chase down. I'd recommend that you cross-post this coin to the CCF counterstamp thread and see if @exoguy or the other folks who hang out there have any ideas. In addition to these overall photos, it might help to take a nice, close-up of just that area on the rev. It sounds like you are saying that this is a separate piece of metal that has been braised to the surface of the coin. Very odd indeed.

Brazed! That's the word I was looking for! I knew "soldered" or "welded" wasn't going to be the right term for this. "Braise" is the cooking-related homophone.

"Maverick" is also a great addition to my numismatic vocabulary (which is usually pretty competent).

Thank you, Spence, for those and for your advice, too. I didn't know we had a c/m thread here. Now I'll see if I can figure out how to cross-post.

Wash your hands, everybody!
Tom
