Purchased this coin along with 8 other coins today from a local man who owned a coin shop about 25-30 years ago. I haven't handled many modern halves this nice, let alone one almost 200 years old.

Sadly I shipped out 29 coins yesterday to PCGS, or everything I bought today would be in registered mail on it's way to California today...

I am adding 2 photos obverse and reverse to demonstrate the insane luster on this coin, strike isn't the best I've ever seen but sheesh, I was almost scared to photograph this one.

Petty impressive - I'll say at least AU-58.

I think it is strike weakness on the hair, some other photos I took yesterday might help.

worth grading for sure. this is a toughie for me. definitely weakness in strike is playing a role here. this one could come back as AU58 or low MS as the strike may hold it down. I'm leaning AU58. its not BU imo as noted on the holder. this one will be interesting to see how it comes back

The luster is pretty impressive. I'd go with MS-63.

Cleaned? You referring to the die scratches? I assure you, there are no hairlines.

The luster is going in different directions, not an original chartwheel look. Too bright with no tone in the protected areas.

Maybe stop sending your coins to PCGS and try NGS (or ANACS) instead.

NGC is okay but no, not ANACS, not for anything with value.

Ok.
But I get the impression that the OP is very unhappy with PCGS lately.

I can see it coming back as cleaned, but damaged?! I wish there would be an explanation as to where the "damage" is. I don't get it.

the only thing I can think of is that they considered the cleaning/polishing severe enough to assign the designation or that there was something added when they cleaned it that damaged the surfaces permanently

. The coin was most likely severely cleaned/polished multiple times over the years which damaged the surface.
