I am new to this. Doing some coin roll hunting came across this 1958 penny where it looks like Lincoln has some extra copper in his hair. Can someone tell me what I am looking at here? Thx.

Looks like a classic die chip. The dies were heavily overused throughout the 50's so die wear is extremely common.

The hair area was a common place for the die to start cracking (as seen on your coin) and eventually pieces of the die would break off and cause corresponding raised areas like this on the coin. They start as small die "chips" and progress to larger die "breaks." I believe this one may be big enough to be considered an "Interior Die Break" or IDB.

to CCF. I agree with RIDB=retained interior die break, not a die chip. And just a FYI: it is a cent not a penny.

I'd call that a die break. And probably soon that die probably created retained die chips. (Just not to that yet)
