It appears to be a high grade Indian Head cent. Luster present. Impressive detail. But the reverse seems problematic with doubling and awkwardly formed lettering. The owner insists it's real but I need a second opinion. I don't know the series well at all. Any help is appreciated!

Can you show us larger pics, taken straight-on?

Full disclosure. I'm pretty dang new at this coin thing. I hope I'm not sending you on a wild goose chase. To me, in my very very novice opinion, the reverse of the coin looks like it is fr the 1860's. I think the earlier coins had a perfect circle for the O in the ONE, but the later coins had a more elliptical O in the ONE. Again I'm brand new at this, that's just my gut feeling. I'm currently out of town. I would be glad to see what years of Indian Head cents I have and upload some pics when I get back home in a couple of days, if you think that would help you out.

The N's just look weird. It's not an expensive coin I would pass or get it cheap.

Coinfrog, I don't have the best camera here. And it seems when I try to post additional photos I'm blocked. What I notice about the reverse especially is the doubling or fudging of some letters as if it was sloppily minted. Or maybe this occurred on some coins in that period. I don't know. Is it possible it's just a fake? It is obviously mint state but is it an original coin?

Again, I suggest that larger pics, taken straight-on, will resolve the authenticity of this coin.

Something seems odd about the necklace at the edge of the throat.
And you are right about the reverse. the "rippling" effect on the left side looks off.
Personally, I'd stay away from it.

My guess? Real coin that was whizzed heavily. The rippling isn't extreme enough to be acid damage, but is stronger than most whizzings I've seen.
That's just my guess though.

My opinion is no, but I am a hack. I made a nice Xray photo comparison, but I forgot how to use the photo interface that has some really obtuse function,, sorry

My apologies for not getting pictures up, I forgot the image launcher starts behind my window without showing me. it is I thnk, fake and a fake made by precision CNG. The denticles are not formed completely and also not in correct direction.

Thanks for all the input! I appreciate it! I've tried to take better photos but they've not been what's needed. It is a sharply detailed coin but the reverse especially is puzzling. Under a loupe the coin simply looks messy. Have a great day and thank you!

Not sure why anyone would make a fake one of those. I'd just put it in my Album and forget it.
