And then there was 1.

I snagged this one for $275 last night and quite liked it. It has a very strong strike, good quality luster, and is nearly completely die crack free (there is 1 small one on the obverse).

Now having bought this one I'm only missing 1 coin to finish the nickels section of my US Type Set. Though the with rays Shield nickel will likely be very tough. From what I have seen trying to find a well struck, die crack free, MS64/65 example with good luster is extremely hard, but I'll do it eventually.

Thanks guys! Even though I'm not usually a fan of nickels in general I quite liked this one.

Awesome!

I think I feel the opposite when it comes to die cracks. The more the merrier, and then I might buy!

Yes, this is a very nice Shield nickel! So close to gem! Examples that are die crack free are a challenge! If you'd like another challenge, try to find one with clashing! Or of the three leaf variety...they are both difficult to acquire. Congrats on your recent purchase!

I feel that way with moderns, but with earlier coins in general I prefer the clearer fields. In general they're also much harder to find die crack free. As well as the fact that the crispest strikes are only on EDS coins which are by nature die crack free.

Sounds like fun! It may not be for a while as most of my "fun money" is dedicated towards new additions to the set.
