I am also new to the forum, but an old collector. I love it all, and my early mistake was trying to collect it all. Once I realized that I couldn't do that, I tried to achieve some focus. That's difficult when I keep seeing things with great appeal. Also, at a point, the collecting slows down as you only need the rare, expensive items. That creates the temptation to start a new collection, partly to have some new things coming in at a faster rate.
When I started, circa 1958, condition was not as critical as it is now. As my collection has developed, my new purchases are sufficiently scarce that there can be no waiting for a piece in better condition. Now that I have greater appreciation the historical significance of the items, my collecting addiction is back to not looking at condition when a new item comes along. I may not live long enough to ever see one in better condition.
Joining a coin club puts you in touch with experienced collectors. You can pick up a lot of new information, and impart information that you know about your specialties. Also, old guys need a younger collector to want their stuff. Cool!
