Could be a gas bubble (test with a toothpick) or it could be die damage. (if it is firm)

I used a toothpick. I have 5 of these. I'm trying to picture what could've damaged the die like that. If you look it runs on the outside and inside the ear. All five are the same.

Hmm more than one that looks identical makes me think that it happened at the mint (maybe a die crack as @cs mentioned). Not the usual place for a die crack though.

I like it. Must be some kind of die damage.

Speaking of "Ear Worms", didn't the original Outer Limits Tv show with Rod Sterling have an episode about Earwigs tunneling through a guy's brain?

It's from a 1972 episode of The Night Gallery called "The Caterpillar" (bad name for the episode!) One of my favorites!!

Sorry to pull up old stuff. I've run across 6 of these now. This one is the most pronounced. Has anyone run across this?
