Hello!

My specialism is on coins from the late era of George III - specifically the 1816 plus period. I have a large collection of Shillings, Sixpences, Half Crowns and Crowns. I also have a good collection of the sovereigns and half sovereigns of that period.

I have come to this forum however, to seek advice on Half Dollars from the early 1900's through to the end of the 1947 period - Barber and Walking Liberty. I am hoping to pull together a date run and wanted advice on the best place to look for these coins in the UK (I am based in London) or in the US where perhaps there may be dealers prepared to ship to the UK.

I have seen a number of coins for sale on ebay but the prices are quite large when you consider the overall sales costs of shipping etc. I wonder if there are better options.

There is also a few people in the UK selling these coins on ebay but I don't know if the coins are good as the pictures seem to suggest they are worn badly and I do not know if this is generally to be expected. With the George III coins they can still be found in mint condition - is this not the same with the 1900's half dollars - as an example see: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133500636898

This guy is selling a lot of Barber and Walking Libs - they are all worn - is this usual?

Thank you so much in advance. Any advice is gratefully received.

Andrew.

To CCF , Andrew , Most Barber halves on e-bay are low circulated coins , the Walking Liberty halves are a good mixture of grades Good to uncirculated . You get what you pay for like anything else . I agree that postage is a thorn in most collectors sides . I suggest you find the nearest coin shop in your city .They will have U.S. coins .

Greetings Andrew!
If you are not familiar with NUMISMEDIA here are two links:

http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/ba...icesgd.shtml
http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/wl...icesgd.shtml

It looks like the 1915-D went for full market value.

If you need help with grading the CCF can be of GREAT HELP! Ask us anything. If a particular coin on ebay attracts you post us a link and we can evaluate.
My area is Barber coins all four series. My complete Barber Half collection is mostly good and the came from my father and Great Aunt. During the years which interest you people spent halves and they got worn. Fifty cents was a LOT of money back then.
Being in Britain is your main challenge. I imagine that a lot of coins found there way there in the pockets of American soldiers during the War. (I bought a splendid Barber dime from a woman in Britain.) Good luck locally.
Well, ta ta for now.

Oh bloody, now I have to learn converting between pounds and dollars!

What has puzzle me for years, have been collecting since 1974, is that foreign coinage (non-U.S.) has such a large gap in price difference comparatively for the same grade coin. You are correct that both the Barber and Walking Liberty halves are commonly found worn. More so towards the early years of each series. Strange but that's simply the reality of U.S. coins.
