Aloha, I am new to the world of coin collecting. I was going through some old boxes in my house and came across this 1861 Liberty Head $2.5 gold coin. It is in one of those cardboard coin holders with clear protective over top. It looks to be in really good condition, almost brand new if you ask me. I have been looking online to see if it is worth anything. I found different values online. I wanted to see if anyone here knows more about this coin and what the value could be. Any help would be appreciated.

The folks who can answer your question will need larger pictures. Cropping is essential.

to CCF. You need a new 2x2 for it anyway,so carefully remove it and take better photos then post the. Make sure to properly crop and rotate the photos before posting...thanks.

Be very careful removing it from the holder so the staples don't scratch it—it's a potentially valuable coin. And definitely don't try to wipe or clean the coin once it's out.

A very well preserved specimen indeed, interesting that the deterioration of the 2x2 didn't seem to expose it.

Thanks for the larger pics, but the obverse one is too blurred to get a good feel for surface details.

I don't see any obvious signs of cleaning. Looks like a type 2 reverse. I'd say AU-58 with the new pics, but mint state wouldn't surprise me.

Thank you all who replied and helped me out with this. I decided to send it in to NGC for grading. Hopefully it obtains a high grade. Besides ebay, does anyone know another good place to try and sell coins?

I'm fairly new to coin collecting so take my advice with a grain of salt, BUT, that looks AU/UNC details. Gonna need better pics to tell if its UNC.

So I finally got my 1861 Type 2 $2.5 Liberty Head coin back from NGC. They determined that my coin is AU Details: Cleaned. Since I am new to the Coin World, I know it is bad to clean your coins cause it loses value. This coin was given to me as is. Given that it has been cleaned, can anyone give me an estimated value for my coin?

It's the more common new reverse. As quarter eagles go it's one of the most common, but still a Civil War coin which adds something. $400-500 retail, $300 to a dealer if you're lucky.

Finally received my graded 1861 Type 2 $2.5 Liberty Head coin back from NGC. It came back to me graded as an AU Detail Cleaned. I don't want to keep the coin.

In the end it is a 160 year old coin and that is cool. It is unfortunate that someone decided to clean it up and make shinny. At today's spot gold price it does have $226 of gold in it.
