I need a Kennedy half for my type set. Thinking 1964 but the higher graded examples in PCGS holders are pretty well toned. MS66 seem to be more expensive than various price guides. Thoughts?

If I were going to have just one Kennedy for my type set I would go for strike and ignore color. And since the coin would represent the design all I would need was one that would show the cleanly/clearly. And my type set doesn't contain any proofs; I only want business strikes. I'd probably be looking for an MS-66; maybe a -67 if the price wasn't too much. 90%? 40%? Clad? Wouldn't matter.

Doesn't your type set have two Kennedy's? Since you said 1964, I'm guessing your looking for a 90%'er.

My type set has 3 Kennedy halves. A 90% (MS-65), a 40% (MS-65), and a clad (MS-68). If you want, click the link to view my type set in my signature box below to view those coins.

The typical type set would have three: 90% silver, 40% silver, and Cu-Ni clad. Then there are other considerations, like proof, SMS, satin finish, enhanced uncirculated (two different versions), reverse proof, enhanced reverse proof, and gold... I may have missed something.

I am working on a business strike type set. No proofs in it.

Then it depends on what you want.
Want a very high grade cheap? Go for a CuNi.
Want a mix of affordable grade and color? Go for a 40%.
Want rich toning, but at a higher expense? Go for a 90%.
Of course you could also go blast white for either the 40 or 90

For me, I'd go with a high grade '64--the inaugural coin--the classic.

For the Dansco I'd choose the 1964 and 2001d. First year, final year meant for circulation. MS67.

Picked up this one in MS66. I liked the cool toning.

Quote: I'm losing my mind. I had to go back and check. My Dansco only has two. Sorry about that. I forget that in my 7070, the "1965- Clad" hole has a 40% silver clad while the bicentennial (page five) is the Cu-Ni clad. And with that I just realized I left the bicentennial issues off that extended list above. Quote: I chose this one in mine
