Received in the mail today a wonderful surprise from one of our members. Thanks so much Marc.

Artuqids of Mardin
Qutb al-Din il Ghaz II
AH 572-580 (1176-1184)
Ae Dirham
Obverse: Roman type bust with head looking up, Some believe the coin to be modeled after a coin of Constantine I.
Obverse legend:
Top: bin Alpi bin
Bottom: Timurtash bin
Left: il-Ghaz
Right: bin Artuq
The obverse legend is a continuation of the reverse legend.
Reverse: Legend in five lines.
il Ghazi
al'-mawlana al-malik al-alim
al'adil Qutb al Din
Malik al- umana shah
Diyarbakr

Sorry I don't know the translation, maybe KS can shed some light on it.
Ae Dirham

That is a beaut Ron! The inscription is a bit of a family history isn't it?

A correction. This coin did not come from Marc but from my Very good friend Bob L through Marc. Bob thank you so much, it has really cheered me up. It's a wonderful coin.

@Dave, this is a strange coin in that there are mistakes in the legend spelling and wording. For some unknown reason they played this guy up, feeding his ego.

Yes not sure about spelling mistakes, but I wonder if the declaration of lineage was for an ego boost, to show legitimacy of rule, or some other reason.

The translation is something like this.

Reverse:
il-Ghazi ("the Warrior") / al-mawlana ("the lord") al-malik ("the king") al-'alim ("the wise") / al-'adil ("the just") Qutb al-Din ("Axis of the Faith") / malik al-amara ("king of the commanders") shah / Diyarbakr ("shah of Diyarbakr")

Obverse:
bin Alpi / bin Timurtash / bin Ghazi / bin Artuq (bin = "son of").

A very modest fellow
