It has taken me a couple of days to finally get around to posting this one, after finding the 1958 5 Cent DDO I decided to check the rest of my 1950's nickels and low and behold I ended up finding this beauty.

Just like the 1958, you see the split in the bottom right of the "I" in DEI

In this second photo you will see the "GRA" of GRATIA and if you look at the bottom of the "R" you will see splits on both the legs, and also a Notch in the bottom right of the "G"

This DDO is identical to the 1958 5 Cent DDO, the 1958 is a lot nicer, however I like this one because it is not just a DDO but it is also on the Bug Tail version none the less.

I would venture a guess that all the 1957 bugtails have this. I did a spot check just now on 10 1957 bugtails and sure enough all of them showed notches and splits you showed here.

That just further confirms the DDO for 1957.

The Bug Tail serves as a die marker, that just shows they were all produced from the same die pair.

Now to determine if it is common or not, I will have to check the 1957's without the bug tail. If all normal 1957's without a bug tail have the doubling as well, than I would consider this DDO common.

Great photo papeldog,

what you see is a die chip on the left leaf.

Cuds happen on the edge of a coins rim and sometimes they expand into the feild of the coins design, a Cud is the result of a working die breaking a chunk off of its edge an than strikes a coin.

A die chip is usually very small and just a tiny little chunk taken out of a certian random area within the coins feild. Keep in mind when a working die is being used to strike a coin, the design is incuse on the working die, so it is easy for a raised edge of a die design to get chipped off, strike a coin, then that coin have a raised chip in the exact same location.
