I found this 1997 P LMC with lines that do not match normal ears for this or any year. I found one like this when I first starting variety collecting and not really knowing to question anything like this I tossed it back. I had a few regrets with that decision later then this one came up. The lines are fluid and this was not from a hit as no metal can be seen to have been moved. Thoughts?

I do not think it is a new variety.

It may not be John1 but this is only the second one that I have seen with overlapping lines at the back of the ear.

If you're talking about the faint line on the back of the ear, that I believe is just MD. I kind of made a study on these, as they were much more prominent on the shield cents. I come across these from time to time. Just a weird location for Machine Doubling.

I had thought about the MD angle but the intersecting lines are not flat nor are they shelflike. One line from lobe to top follows the die lines perfectly, the other die line does not, especially at the intersection. I may send it in or just keep it in a 2x2 for the cool factor.

Sure looks like a contact mark to me. The new "line" looks like displaced metal.

When they say displaced metal, they actually mean the die was polished off a bit into that area. So when the coins are struck, the area will appear raised. That is what you are seeing.
