Is the online auction site, Great Collections, a good, safe place to buy and/or sell coins? From what I've seen, it appears better than ebay.

Thoughts? Experiences? Recommendations?

I've bought a number of coins from Great Collections and I have never had a question about those coins.
Considering that that the coins are slabbed AND GC gives you great images to look at there should be no problems.

I have never sold a coin through GC.

Thanks Kanga. I am unclear about how much a coin would cost me if I won one of their auctions.

Let's say I have the winning bid of $100. The auction has the following footnote:

GC's standard 12.5% buyer's fee (min $5) applies to this auction, discounted to 10% (min $5) if paid by Check, eCheck or Wire. All bids are in U.S. Dollars.

So if I paid with a credit card, the coin would cost me $100 + $12.50 ? And if I paid by Check, eCheck, or Wire, the coins would cost me $110?

Does GC charge for state taxes? And what about shipping costs?

Thanks in advance.

That's correct. And here's some additional info from their website:

Sales Tax. California residents will be charged sales tax. Please note that the purchase of coins and/or bullion with a price, including the buyer's fee, in excess of One Thousand, Five Hundred Dollars ($1,500.00) is exempt from California sales tax. This $1,500.00 rule only applies to coins appearing on the same invoice and does not apply to catalogs, numismatic accessories or membership fees.

Domestic (U.S. shipments)
USPS First Class Mail $5.00, plus $0.50 per coin.
USPS Priority Mail - $12.50, plus $0.50 per coin.
USPS Express Mail - $34.00, plus $1.00 per coin.

Domestic (U.S.) First Class - Shipments up to 6 Coins/Paper Money
Only invoices with 6 coins/paper money or less can be sent First Class. Invoices with 7 or more coins/paper money must be sent Priority Mail or Express Mail.

They are a great place to buy (I haven't sold through them) and they are wonderfully responsive. I've emailed Ian about a rant published ATS at 11pm on a Saturday and it was resolved the next day. They are also just genuinely nice people - fun to talk to at coin shows.

I have bought quite a few coins from Great Collections and have never had any issues with them. Their pictures are great. I've had very good experiences with David Lawrence with many purchases from them and they have no buyer's fees in addition to free shipping. With them, if you bid $150 for a coin and win, you pay $150. Period.

Ian the owner is a member here and a very nice guy, I'm sure he wouldn't mind you emailing him and questions you may have.
