Hi, guys!

Has anybody tried one of these for coins? There are quite a number of variations of this type of device ranging in price from under $100 (which is what I can manage) to over $1k, and I'm guessing there's a big difference. I'm talking about the cheap versions.

(I'm going to put a link here instead of a picture. For some reason the image upload tool is telling me the picture I took is too big (it's 204KB).

Anybody tried one?

Thanks!

Someone should build a cell phone into his thing!

Being serious, I like the kickstand feature, but the magnification on a cell phone can get closer.

The LED lighting on this item also looks non-adjustable.

Darth Morgan had a great setup for using an iPhone:

Look through the entire thread though as it got simpler as time went on, and the pics are great!

I tried to copy what he was doing and ended up with this:

The lights have a built in diffuser, but I want to try to use a tissue as well. I just have not taken the time to yet.

Controlling the lighting is the key angles, I believe, to getting good pics. The magnifier you show won't let you do that.

If you're not concerned with photo capability, just magnification and illumination, it may be okay. However, the image is dependent on the resolution of the screen, so a more "old-school" illuminated magnifying glass may provide a better viewing experience.

Thanks, guys. If I could create a wish list for a device that "does it all," here's what I want:

1) Good, magnified visualization of the whole coin that allows for full detail without distortion.

2) Lighting that illuminates without glaring.

3) The ability to freeze the image or get a photo so that it doesn't go out of focus if my hand moves.

4) PORTABLE, so I can take it to coin shows or when I'm checking out a friend's collection.

5) Yes, good photos that I can put on my computer would be awesome. I'd love to be able to document my collection (Such as it is) that way.

By the way, loupes tend to give me a headache pretty fast, and most handheld magnifying glasses do as well. I think it's the distortion and manual focusing—hard to hold my hand still once I have it in focus. That's why I want something that freezes an image on a screen.

THIS might be a cheaper way to get most of what I want. Anyone have one of these, and do you like it? I think there'd still be some issues with lighting, but there are workarounds like the lamps above, and at coin shows the dealers' lights are usually pretty good.
