hello, I am new. I found this in an unopened roll of 1950's wheats. Please help me identify...looks like either ribbon banner or eagle wing on Lincolns forehead (possible insert of crude remarks b/c also looks phallic) also looks as though minted in san fran but s not punched properly. I really appreciate and advise. Thank you in advance !!       |

And don't spit on the sidewalk around here either, newbie, or else the boys will run you out of town like a scalded dog.  (Seriously, what kind of welcome was that?) Your post was fine. Ask as many questions as you want. If the mintmark you're referring to is on the right between the 5 & 6 I think that's just a bit of damage that looks vaguely like an S. I've never seen a MM that far right. As to the forehead issue, that looks like either an Retained Interior Die Break or a lamination error about to peel off. The RIDB is when the die starts to break inside the field of the coin, (as opposed to breaking on the edge which produces a Cud), and the piece of metal that's coming off get's pressed back into the die. Forgot to mention, that's a nice find on a coin in very good condition. If you're just starting out as a collector or coin roll hunter, that's a great way to start.
Put it in a 2X2 and go get some more rolls!

No, you have no reason to apologize. I was being sarcastic about the nature of the first response to your post which I saw as being rude and disrespectful to you. I should have used a different emoji.

Better, higher resolution photos--with less glare--might help. Given the images posted, I'm thinking die cracks--classic cracked skull. Not uncommon with '50s cents. Nice example.

Yeah, I am thinking interior die break,. in fact found this on ebay, looks a lot like yours, but more worn than yours and I think it's a bit different die state. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-Linco...383525404937has the I issue as well, not sure if that the beginning of a die chip or what. |
