how much is a 1944 D/S Lincoln Cent worth with a complete separation of the mint marks? The S is Completely southwest of the primary mint mark. Not an expert but coin is in excellent condition. Not Sure how to add a picture. I've been trying it won't let me. any help would be appreciated. Edited by goddfather1 02/11/2006 11:50 pm

Hello and welcome! We have a number of Lincoln collectors here that will probably be able to help you. I'm sure that Coppercoins will be replying soon.

Hi godfather
you can use Mikes helpful price guide info on the coin,, my opinion of the grade is this
the coin has what look like VF-20 details weak reverse, but the finger prints both obv,and Rev. are going to ding the grade, F-12 net IMO.

I think the fingerprints might be on the mylar holder. Also, I'd be willing to bet that the wheat ears are sharper than they appear in the pics. When these are photographed through mylar, the details get mushy. If the fingerprints are on the holder, I'd give it a VF25. If the fingerprints are on the coin, F15. Very nice detail and a great error!

There are only two different dies known to exhibit a D with an S mintmark on 1944 cents. The information posted in this thread have to do with those two dies, and those two only.
The originator of this thread describes something that has yet to be reported and studied by any author in the field that I know of, so its authenticity and value would be impossible to ascertain here.
A number of things that would have little or no value could be mistaken for a yet to be reported D/S OMM. I think it would be quite presumptuous for anyone to jump to the conclusion of a value without first asking if the coin had been authenticated as what the originator states it is.

The only correct answer, and forgive me for being blunt... Nothing until it is authenticated, photographed, and published by a reliable source.

Coppercoins, thanks for posting this information. In that light and bowing to your expertise I have removed the Heritage sale price posts so as not to give godfather1 a false impression of value or authenticity of the coin . I posted this information before the pictures were posted and not being aware that the coin is likely something else. Mike

Who would I need to contact in order to have this coin checked out?

I could check it if you wish. My attribution services are temporarily suspended, but I could make an exception to check something out that has as much possible potential as this. If it's the real deal, it will be headline news. If not, it's just another Two Cent wheat. Either way, I'd be glad to give it a look, take close-up photos of it, and render my opinion. Instructions for sending coins in for attribution are located here: http://www.coppercoins.com/attribution.phpYou may forego the charge, just use the address located there to send the coin.
