Hey guys. I have this penny. It is on a larger planchet than the normal penny. Pictures to show size. I did research to see what foreign currency the Philadelphia mint produced in 1972. This coin weighs 3.1g like a normal penny. However is larger. In researching the closest thing I can find would be possibly the Panama Balboa? It is 3.1g made of copper and possibly larger. Could this be a penny on a panama planchet? Or during the minting process can a planchet be hit so hard it flattens the planchet making it larger? Just trying to find out why the size is so different? Any help would be awesome!

Agree on broadstrike. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Panamanian coins were minted in the US on US planchets in 1972. The Balboa is pegged to the US dollar, and all their denominations use the same planchet composition and sizes as US coins of the same denomination. In other words, a 1972 penny struck on a Panamanian planchet would just be a normal 1972 penny.

I'm in the broadstruck camp. @coinerin, can you please post the diameter of this coin to this thread? Thx.

I'm almost sure it's a broad strike. The coin was struck on a normal planchet, but outside of the retaining collar so it wasn't limited to the normal diameter of 19.05 mm. Do you happen to know the diameter of your coin? Not that it will change my answer, I'm just curious.

What me wonder is, how does it have a reverse rim? Makes me wonder it is was struck once in the collar and once out of the collar, exactly on the devices both times. Most of the time the devices will be enlarged on the second strike:

Note the enlarged devices on the second strike enlarged from the first strike?

Is there any chance this could be a " Texas Cent" that was also a Dryer Coin? Is it thinner than a regular cent?
