Hey everyone, I come to you all again with another find that I'm unsure of. I think my eye has gotten a bit better, but as with anything, I'm going to defer to those with more experience in the field...

So, what we have here is a 1973-D Lincoln Penny that doesn't really stand out all too much on the surface. It was only when I took a closer look with my loupe that I discovered that the date appears to have doubling of some kind.

Could I also be a big pain and ask for a quick explanation of whatever your verdicts turn out to be? Doesn't have to be long, but, I'm eager to learn how and why you guys come to your conclusions.

I greatly appreciate any feedback, advice, or suggestions.

sorry but I'm not seeing doubled die but rather Machine Doubling . The die itself is double and with this you see the shelf-like shadows and their not rounded edges on the numbers or letters ?
I know it stinks, but keep trying. I have 50lbs of pennies to go through (half way ) through (no doubles), ughh! Me too.

to the CCF!

It's Machine Doubling or MD. It's not doubling on the die, but is caused by the die shifting or bouncing after the strike cutting into the devices.

It is MD. It also looks like the coin is in a 2x2 holder? If so,it it always best to take pics of a coin out of whatever type of holder it is in whenever possible.

@13m, that is a great example of Machine Doubling as noted by @ss66 and @yoko. The reason is that it looks "shelf-like" and reduces the thickness of the letters. On this coin, circulation flattening has sorta cancelled that out, but you can see that the top of the number three is a bit thinner.
