Hi all,

Am having trouble identifying the 2 varieties for the 2001 $2 coin. Have ones with the I separate from the RB and others with IRB all touching. All the heads seem the same size. Can anyone point me to a link with comparison images or maybe upload an image?

Thanks

Hmmm...Can't say I'm familiar with 2 varieties for the 2001 $2 coin.

Do you have any more specific info about it?

I have a fair few with errors but no varieties.

Now that I think about it, it's possible that the I RB and IRB are the two varieties.

Can any one else shed some light on this?

Hi Nancy,

Actually, looks like there might be 3 varieties but many of the specimens I have are worn. Also not sure of the joining could be grease in die.

It would appear then David that you have the two varieties that are hardest to come by ... according to Numista most were the 'IRB spaced' with the large head (35,650,000) which is what the RAM lists as there total mintage (35.6m) for 2001.
https://www.ramint.gov.au/two-dollars

2001 - "RB" joined and "I" spaced (1.1%)
2001 - Large Obv Head, IRB Spaced (13%)
2001 - Small Obv Head, IRB Joined (2.0%)

I believe the I R B and I R_B coins have different sized heads but I'm not sure which is which - there are only the two varieties as far as I know.
