To CCF , You need enlarged photos of obverse and reverse . Does the coin stick to a magnet ? Could be a normal zinc plated steel cent and the copper tone that your seeing could be rust showing through .

Agree crop and enlarge your images, showing both sides of the coin right-side up.

looks very obviously steel to me. It's rusting and a copper penny would weight 3.1 grams.

Isn't that weight too high for a steel cent?

A steel cent should weigh 2.72 grams. This one seems to be within mint tolerances or just over weight. A more accurate 0.01 or 0.001 scale might put it at a slightly different weight than this 0.1 range range scale. I really don't think it's a copper strike.

Calling all metallurgists - does a rusted steel cent weight more, less or the same as a non-rusted one?

The iron would combine with oxygen "because of moisture in the air" and form the molecules of rust, so it would (extremely slowly) gain weight/mass as long as nothing is disturbing it.

Definitely would need better pictures, seeing that there's plenty of fake copper 1943 cents around.

I'm trying to figure out why it says the OP has 0 posts, when clearly they have at least 1.

We need essential information to avoid fruitless speculation-does it or does it not stick to a magnet?

I am not sure why the OP did not report on the results of the most obvious and easiest test.

Given the photo, its a rusted steel cent--I have a few tubes of 'em which look very much like the one pictured--very much.
