Obverse would be the front of the coin, in this case, the image of Jefferson.

Hmmm. It is interesting. Some kind acid etching on the surface? I want to see the obverse as well.

The orange or yellow staining on both sides makes me think some type of acid/chemical has been in its past. Dont know how that may have added to the damage on the reverse. But people can get pretty creative.
