Oh great experts of the internet, I summon thee I picked up this uncirculated walking liberty for an absolute steal, but I can't shake this feeling I have. It shines like crazy, but the light reflected is almost too unnaturally even, and it doesn't radiate light in waves/lines like my other ones. For example, my other coins radiate lines that circle around the coin in the light, this one just relfects the light back directly. I likely have no idea what I'm talking about but I'd like to hear what you think. Is it cleaned? Or am I just going crazy? I can provide more pics of the reverse or in different lighting. As always, much appreciated

You're right to question this one. It's either been polished to death or plated. Either way, altered surfaces. Hopefully you didn't pay too much over bullion pricing.

Yes, well I was hoping that wasn't the case. I paid a little under 20$ in total for this plus some extra capsules and whatnot. Not too big of a deal still nice to look at. At least now I'll know for the future. Thanks for telling me!

I agree it is either plated or polished. It doesn't appear to have any natural cartwheel luster, it just looks flat shiny.

The fact that it reflects the light back at you that tends to mean as all above are saying : polished or plated .

Not the best pics, but plating makes sense.

Sure has sharp detail. Don't suppose it could be a proof? How about showing us the reverse?

That's exactly what I was thinking... Just look at the hand...I think polishing or plating would have flattened the details?

It's polished or plated, maybe even both. For reference, this split image is what both the 1942 Uncirculated and Proof Walking Liberty half dollars should look like. Neither have a mirrored finish like this coin, so it would have to have been modified outside of the mint. PSD

Update: the darn thing smells like chemicals and polish so yes, it has been cleaned and polished. Still looks nice to keep around but thanks to everyone who helped! I.N

However for what you paid for that you still ended up with a really great looking coin. Although polished it still is in fantastic shape.
