OP ... If you and the owner of the coin believe it to be genuine then you might as well bite the bullet and submit the coin for third party authentication. I would suggest ANACS as there is no membership fee to submit coins and costs and turnaround times are very reasonable.

No matter who you send it to the coin will "details" grade due to the damage. Nice find if it turns out to be genuine!

Yeah westernsky, I actually have a PCGS Membership. So I'm going to submit it with them. Even if it gets the damage with details, I'll be happy if its confirmed genuine.

Also another thing that I noticed that matches the genuine examples, is the die mark that is right below the T in CENT:

Here is the example:

And here is mine. It's faint, but in the right light you can make out the etched mark that runs below the T:

Incredible book find. I would look closely at all of the coins in the book. The best I've spotted in an album was an uncirculated 1943 D/D but unfortunately was beaten at auction. Awesome!

I think I see the die dot below the left wheat stalk on the reverse as well. I'm pretty sure that this is the real deal here.

Not too shabby at all. how to help your buddy out.

As for value, it looks to be EF details (plus those deep gouges) so probably less than $1000.
(Bay had an NGC ms62 UNC Details sell for $1,308.00 in Aug. 2020)

My personally opinion is that this example is genuine. The wear patterns, color and discoloration patterns, and die markers all point towards a genuine example.

Cool. Given the photos provided, the coin looks legit. Value would be determined by the marketplace. Wonder what else is in that coin book.

It sure looks legit and would be the find of a lifetime for most. If you're gonna post some more closeups could you get one of the incused letters "VDB" at the bottom of Lincoln's bust. Given the presence of reverse dye marker its probably not necessary, but it would seal things up nicely

Congrats in advance!

Many times when we see such coins as this one, we ask for close-ups and them we never hear from the OP again, so thank you for providing the photos we asked for!

I'd definitely send it into a TPG for verification. If you do, please share the results with us.

Also has the die dot below the lower left wheat stem:
Rare-1c-1955-DDO-Found-In-Coin-Book!
Found on the later die state (not LDS) before the fulled the die on the LMDS coins. A die dot I picked up a few years back for something to look for on these dies.
