I found this cent in a roll. I can't identify the date but I've never seen this kind of error. The NITED can be seen on the crack.

The letters on the clipped area appear raised, is that significant in any way?

The zinc core is decaying and leaving the copper as it was when struck. The letter are raised because the copper isn't rotting away like the zinc. Think of a chocolate coin. The foil cover has the coin design in relief even after the candy is gone. Copper plated zinc coins are know for this defect. Once the copper is damaged, it's just a matter of time before the zinc rot starts if the coin is exposed to the elements.

Combination of damage and zinc rot. Wash your hands after spending.
