Hi All,

two questions, same coin:

Curious on what you all think this is. I'll see this strange I'll cal them them "Crows feet" lines on dimes Obverse near the eyes on occasion, this one if fairly pronounced. Is that Die Deterioration or over polishing?

On the Reverse you can clearly see the same type of lines, but it looks like it led to some die chips or extra metal (they are not bubbles I tried depressing). Looks different than typical dime chips I find on dimes. What do you all think?

Thanks,

-GB

Yes a tired die develops these striations which are transferred on to the coins that are struck from it.

Thanks guys! I found this article on Die state after reading your comments to learn more... I didn't realize how common VLDS technically is... but this does feel like an extreme example....

All dies that are not retired early, eventually get to look that bad.

So if a coin is showing extreme die wear (VLDS) and it is in the highest amounts created by all dies, why would we save these?

@coop I was thinking the same thing when I read that. Changed my mind a bit on what to save unless for education on super extreme examples... and of course now I know what that is when I see it. Thanks!

I prefer the earlier die states. When you see images of them, they always seem to smile. Most of the time when someone has an EDS coin, they always assume it is a doubled die. Many times I've seen this happen on the forums.
