I am really stumped here. I have a 1963 D with a high rim and the motto is close to the wall which distorts the motto. To complicate things the coin is bright and difficult to take pics. I think I see some doubling on liberty and the date but need help.
No. This is called die wear. Note the devices are moving towards the rim.On a doubled die, the centers of the devices are enlarged from the hub process to create the die. Note the centers of the devices on this DDO: Compared with the normal coin image above it, see how much wider the devices are? On die wear the devices more towards the rim, just on the side that is closest to the rim: When they move this way, note how they distort. See the bottoms of the devices? That is what they looked like when the die was fresh and new. Now the die is ready for retirement. See how much the metal move happens: Note the size of the letters are the same size. Metal is moving towards the rim. Not a doubled die as only the edge towards the rim are affected. The bottoms of the devices are what they normally started out, just like the example above.
