to the CCF! As stated it is Machine Doubling. What causes Machine Doubling? Loose dies. When the die strikes and is loose it can shift either clockwise or counterclockwise. When the die shifts it moves the metal. Whenever you see devises that look doubled and the doubling is flat, like on your cent, it is caused by Machine Doubling AKA loose dies. It also happens on the reverses of coins as well.

Probably die clashes take their toll on the machine when these happen.
