First of all this is my first post to this forum and I'm also brand spanking new to coin collecting so if I use the wrong phrase, please excuse me.

I found a 2009 Bicentennial The Formative Years penny in my loose change today and when I looked closely on the back, it appears to have errors when I compare it to other coins.

I see 5 things that are different so I'm hoping someone can tell me if I do indeed have a errors coin.

I've attached 2 photos of my coin (one with arrows and one without) as well as a photo of a regular coin.

A) The hammer on mine has a horizontal line to the left of where the handle comes out the bottom.
B) Where his pants are tucked into his boots on his right leg, mine seems to be deeper and longer.
C) His nose is way different than the other coin.
D) At the bend in his knee on the right leg, the lines are again deeper and longer.
E) At the part tucked into his left knee, the wrinkle to the right much longer and deeper.

I'd appreciate any help I can get with this. Also, do you think I should clean it? I did soak it in hot water already to get a bunch of the grime off of it so I could see it but thats all I did.

Thanks, Karen

Nice job pointing out the differences, welcome. I think the differences are due to die state plus tarnishing from circulation. As a die is used, it wears, softening edges that had been sharp. Your top coin has seen enough circulation to increase the contrast between high and low spots, thus they look different from those on a mint state coin.

Hi Karen! I'm Leslie! Good to have you aboard!

This coin you have is known to have about 3000 errors (slight exaggeration). One of the best known errors is for an extra finger on Abe's hand. Here is a link for you that maybe you'll find handy: http://goccf.com/t/373821

Here is another link to most of the known errors on this cent: http://doubleddie.com/60701.html

I wouldn't recommend cleaning your coins in any manor, as cleaning destroys possible value (yes even with water).

to the CCF! I hope you'll stick around!

On the other areas they are probably die chips. This design had a lot of issues with this. The dies were only used for a short time. So no need to fix the issue. (4 different reverse designs that year)
