I recommend you flatten the staples so they don't damage other 2x2's when stacked. John1

The phrase "came into my possession" always makes me wonder how that happened. Sorry, don't know what this is.

@john, I stack my coins vertically, so I'm saved from the damage, thankfully. Secondly, regarding the coin itself, I was told that it is a coin of the Golden Horde Mongols, but I haven't been able to match it visually so far. Thanks.

I don't see a match in my 1899 edition of Petrov, but that only covers Russian / Ukrainian / Black Sea related issues, so by no means definitive - the implication is that we should perhaps be looking a little further east.

@Gincoin43, the golden horde coinage looks awfully similar in certain respects across the empire - character matching and special marker identification are musts.

I've never looked at them before, that was just the vibe I was getting. If it helps I think the Reverse of the link below matches the legend at least. The obverse looks to have some of the same characters but I can't read it so I'm not sure exactly what words are matching. But there is a entry in Russian with a translation. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces155688.html

Yes, the reverse is the Kalima, common to many Islamic coins. On the other side, the titles "sultan" and "khan" are plain. There is also a portion of the ruler's name but it isn't registering in my mind. Unfortunately there is no visible date, which would be a great help. If I have an epiphany, I will be sure to post.

Aha! It is a very rare coin of Tulak Khan (Zeno "Tuliak"/ Album "Tulak"). I was unaware of him, so did not recognize his name although it is almost fully legible. The clue was the Kalima reverse, for which Zeno has a separate section of Golden Horde issues. Album M2048 (RRR). The date 782 (retrograde) is indeed partly visible but a bit out of focus, just below the Kalima. Congratulations! https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=10810

For those with difficulty reading the coin, I have highlighted the ruler's name. Green = Tulak (t-w-la-k) / Blue = Khan ( kh-a-n).
