Nickels do that. Most never get that dark but it's now the metal so no amount of cleaning will help.

Welcome to the forum! That's a really cool-looking nickel. I'd hang onto it, but then I like things that are unusual.

For the future, if you ever come across a coin that you think might be valuable, don't clean it. Even a gentle cleaning can damage a coin and make it less valuable. Get pictures and post them here, as you just did, and there are all kinds of people who are great at this stuff who can tell you what you have. IF there is something you can do to remove some of the gunk, the people here will be able to tell you what to do to preserve the coin.

In this case, I don't think you did any real harm. In perfect condition it would be worth a few bucks, but there's some visible damage that probably happened way before you came across the coin (unless you knocked it around quite a bit). It's still a REALLY cool-looking coin!

AU-UNC. details damage to Monticello . The black color looks to be in the coin itself not covering the coin like a stain or plating . Very odd or you have a very early Black Beauty .

I have had this US War Nickel coin since the 1960's and, yes, it has been cleaned.

United States 5 cents 1944-P ( War Nickel silver)

Parts of the obverse and reverse are black but I assumed the coloring had something to do with the silver in these nickels.
