I'm interested in asking if anyone on this forum might have some information regarding these huge silver coins. I mean, they are massive, weighing in at around 45 g! That's a big coin for circulation!

I'm interested to hear if anyone knows anything regarding their history, value, and rarity. They are available for sale on ebay, but they are not common, and new listings are far and few between.

Here's an example image of one. Thanks for checking this out!

According to Numista and NGC, the coin you have shown was issued while Habibullah was the Emir of Afghanistan. (I'll leave it to you to Google Habibullah for his bio and information on his reign.)

The coins were issued in 1904, 1906 and each year from 1908 to 1911. They are 0.900 fine silver with a total weight of 45.6 grams; each coin contains a net of 1.3195 ounces of silver.

The NGC World Coin Price Guide lists the coin at between $135 and $220 in XF condition; prices for higher grades are not listed.

Based on the NGC pricing table, it would appear that the coin is not too scarce in XF or lower condition, but more difficult to locate in higher grades (e.g., mint state).

The date on your coin is AH 1322 (approx. AD 1904).

Here's another example

I cataloged a bunch of these for a Jess Peters auction in the mid 1970's. Most looked more worn than they actually were due to being weakly struck. Check the edges; worn looking coins with sharp edges are usually weak strikes. My guess was that these large coins were more of a way to store wealth than for use in every day commerce.
