Hello, I just bought a Canadian $1 Centennial bill, and it looks AU to me, but a) I'm really new to grading and b) I don't know how to grade bills in the first place

Can anyone suggest a reference, or grade for the bill?

Thanks!

!, even though you have 42 posts ...

Anyways, I first look at any possible folds. Just hold it up slanted to the light (to see the latent image) and see if there's any bends. An AU and UNC note has no folds. The next grade down can have 1 heavy fold.

Then I would look at the corners. If it's a bit worn, that drops it down to AU.

Then I would look at the color, printing quality to see if it has been washed or modified to a higher grade (like cleaning for coins). This also includes any possible marks on it or discoloring of the paper from circulation.

Then I would see how limp the paper is.

...and that's about it.

Anyways, a grading guide is here
http://www.banknotes.com/grading.htm

I just look at
1. Folds
2. Color
3. Any other foreign marks, slight wear, etc...

It wouldn't be surprising to have an AU Centennial Dollar. A lot of them were put away in the hopes that the price would some day go up, but there were an unbelieveable number of them printed. What kind do you have, the one with a real serial number, or the one with the 1867-1967 Serial Numbers?

Thanks!

Well, my bill is pristine according to your guidelines I did however notice two small spots (stains?) on the edges but otherwise...

Unfortunately, you can't see much with the picture this small, but it's a pretty bill in any case

Mine seems to be the 1867-1967 serial; I don't see any 'normal' serial numbers on it...

Well, you can always go to imageshack, create an account, do multiupload, and look for a url that says https://www.imageshack.us/fkdjslkaf...jsfdkfj.jpg.

Then, put it between [imgk]url.jpg[/imgk] but remove the "k"

Anyways, a few stains wouldn't hurt the bill that much, so they probably knocked it down from UNC to AU.

Hearing from WpgLwr, if too many people hoarded it, especially the dual date numbers, the note is a good keeper, especially when it's celebrating a centenary of a nation!

Wow! Nice note!

I don't see the two stains, but I would say this passes as UNC.

Thanks! Yeah, I only saw the stains when I held it up to the light, and they were about 1-2mm in size, light brownish.

Once I get my 50 posts here, I'll be uploading my coins etc here, but if there's still the size restrictions, I'll put the big files (ie bills) on imageshack or similar.
