I was wondering what kind of damage tape does to notes especially once already preserved/graded. You will see many notes with tape repairs have large brown patches wherever the tape was but what about when notes were freshly taped and then submitted and graded in a third party holder? Will the tape continue to eat away at the paper? Will it eventually eat away a hole? Obviously if that is the case the assigned grade would become obsolete. Whenever purchasing notes that are graded it is important to buy the note, not holder but I am curious if the tape will continue to damage the note.

I think the adhesive on the tape is the root of the problem.

Over time the adhesive will attack the paper and will eventually stain the note.

Best to avoid buying taped notes in the first place!

I agree with Sky...avoid taped notes to begin with. I'd give Nancy a call and get her recommendations regarding the tape. http://www.polirestoration.com/

I understand that staying away from these notes is highly advised however I'm curious if staining from the tape will turn into full blown degradation after a prolonged period regardless of its method of preservation.

I think that there is good tape and bad tape. Most of it would be bad but I suspect that there is archival quality tape. I am sure that the experts will know more.
