It's a beautiful coin Dave. Never seen a MM actually touching a date.

I find it hard to believe that ANACS would do this. Had to see it to believe it.

I would think it's considered an error that;s why Anacs slabbed it the mint mark is some what like a misplaced one not should be touching the 9 I understand why they slabbed it. Jazzcoins Joe

Quote: I would think it's considered an error that;s why Anacs slabbed it Since every coin hit with that die would be that way I would say it's a variety, not an error.

It's actually neither since the mint considers this adequate placement of the mintmark. Slabs like these confuse people who are new to collecting, which is why I can't understand why ANACS would do it. These coins are worth no more than any other normal 1958D cent.

Thanks BadThad! I know MM's are hand applied on pre-89 LC's. I thought this was an interesting attribute as well! I have never seen another like it.

I know the mintmarks were placed into the die by hand and tend to wander, but it still should not be in contact with another design element. For that reason I don't think the mint would have considered it to be proper placement (and may have been replaced shortly after being placed in service once it was noticed by the pressman, or it may have run for it's full life), but it still a variety and not an error. (Yes, it does happen with some of the larger mintmarks in the 19th century issues, but in general they don't want the mintmark to make contact with the design.)

nice variety, but ugly slab. They must have gone to the SGS school of slabbing.

It may just be a normal die, but I like how that D overlaps part of the 9.
