I am in the process to buy my first ancient coin. It shows Octavian on one side and the spoils of the battle of auctium on the other side. The price is 750USD.

I want to know -:

Does the coin look original?
Is the price good/correct?
I think the coin is in good shape - am I correct?

I would like to know from you:

Does the person you are buying it from have a good reputation?

and

Do they offer any guarantees of authenticity?

Congratulations. Good points oriole. You should really purchase from trusted sellers and/or the vendors on vcoins.com (especially when first starting). The large auction houses are also a good bet (CNG, Roma Numismatic etc.). I would stay away from a large purchase like that unless I was guaranteed it was genuine for as long as I own the coin. Or, you could buy a slabbed coin that is professionally authenticated by NGC or PCGS which is pretty much a sure thing.

Quite a first purchase!

I agree that you shouldn't spend this much money on any coin without an unconditional lifetime guarantee from the seller.

This is a popular and expensive type, but not particularly rare. IMO, $750 is too much to pay, given the die gouge on the eye. I would personally not pay more than $500.

A very nice coin for your first ancient. I also agree with the others comments. You did pay a bit more than you should have, the good news is that it's genuine and not a modern fake.
